It was while working on my own business (environmental writing) website that I realized I love the work of website making. It’s a great outlet for my intellect + creativity and a way to help others succeed.

And the world needs more people like us, the dreamers and the doers.

I’m Neva Knott

Writer. photographer. Environmentalist. Naturalist. ... and naturally nerdy.

I learned about ecosystems and landscapes from my father, an ecologist for Washington State, by following him around when I was a little girl, incessantly asking questions. I grew up knowing the difference between salal and Oregon grape. I sat on the porch with him late at night, wrapped in a blanket, and listened to the coyotes howl.

As the adult world came calling I, ironically, took a job at Nordstrom. There, I learned a different environment, the landscape of textiles and fabrication, color, fit, and merchandising. And then I went off to college. 

It was taking a Master’s in Environmental Studies that led me to environmental storytelling. And to founding The Ecofashion Exchange, a platform for (sometimes science-y) ideas about the connection between the natural world and the clothes we wear.

My work as a writer began in the gritty time of DIY Portland that happened in the un-gentrified warehouses of the early 1990s, when everyone was making something. I, along with a gang of big-thinkers, was making Plazm magazine, a gallery in print for artists, writers, and graphic designers.

As I see it, all these parts of my life tie together as a solution to a problem. Humans have made a mess of the environment. To survive, we must come at the mess educated and enchanted. And prepared to educate and enchant others. This is how we inspire change.

Environmentalists and naturalists are most at home in nature. Even we don’t always see the connection between landscapes and everyday human elements, like blue jeans. We're automatically geared to protect the environment, but are we geared to create for it? And to find creative ways to educate others on its behalf? 

This is the job of the sustainability entrepreneur. The change-maker. And the environmental storyteller.
